Twinsburg is one of the Best Small Towns in America, CNN’s Money Magazine says. It’s the third time the Summit County community has made the publication’s annual list, which was released this week.Twinsburg ranked 93 among the top 100 in 2007, and 30 in 2009. This year, the city came in at 32.“It’s definitely a source of community pride,” Mayor Katherine Procop said of the acknowledgement. “I have a saying: We’re not just a city we’re a community. We work together, we play together and we enjoy our successes together. Everyone contributes to this.”Such honors are also a marketing boon, she said.“When we talk about Twinsburg to prospective businesses, incoming residents, and executives, we always talk about our placement” on the CNN list and others, she said. After CNN compared towns using job growth, safety, affordability, arts and leisure, school quality and diversity, four other Ohio cities rose to the top.Solon ranked third, Mason 24th, Highland Heights 30th and Springboro 42nd. All towns in the list have populations of between 8,500 and 50,000.The magazine’s description of Twinsburg noted its Twins Day Festival, “drawing multiples from across the state. The celebration honors the set of twins who donated land to create a town square in the 1800s.”“Halfway between Cleveland and Akron, this safe town has struggled during the recession: its largest employer, the Chrysler Stamping Plant, closed its doors in 2010, laying off nearly 200 people.“But business in the area is looking brighter: a branch of the famed Cleveland Clinic recently opened here,” the magazine said, noting the $97 million project. The article also compared each Best Small Town with the group’s average in several categories. Some Twinsburg comparisons:• The city’s annual median family income is $87,076; the top 100 average is $99,975.• Job growth the past decade was 7 percent, compared with the top 100 average of 25 percent.• The median home price in town was $177,950, compared with a $265,929 average.• The city has access to 20 colleges and universities within 30 minutes, something only two Top 10 cities could beat.• In reading and math scores of its students, Twinsburg fared better than most of its counterparts.• Crime was lower in personal and property categories than the group’s average. The top Small Town for the second consecutive year was Louisville, Colo. The Money Magazine issue also listed other communities in various categories, and Medina ranked 12th under “Affordable Housing” with a 2010 median home sale price of $128,000.“Your housing dollars will go farther in Medina than most anywhere in the country,” said Mayor Dennis Hanwell. “...We are very humbled and honored to be selected for this recognition, and proud to have Medina recognized nationally in this survey.”Paula Schleis can be reached at 330-996-3741 or pschleis@thebeaconjournal.com.
